The Great American Family Mixtape Competition Continues
Some backstory: my sister and I grew up next door to a family of aesthetes. Their father and our father have long been friends and, more importantly, fixtures in each other’s backyard get-togethers. Some time shortly after I moved away, our neighbor started an informal mix competition (“started” being the optimum word).
Of course, it wasn’t long before things turned ugly: think sibling sabotage and fierce custody battles over choice jams. What had begun as good, clean fun had devolved into a bitter feud worthy of its’ own Seven Years’ War.
Now, after a cooling period, kid sister and I are on the same airplane headed back to the homestead. Our neighbor has given us one, final theme to settle the score. A wine merchant, he chose the appropriate-but-still-vague theme of “glass.”
Previous themes have included cooking, photography, and the Good Ol’ Summertime. Here, respectfully submitted for your approval, is the Glass Mix.
“Heart of Glass” - Wink
“Sandy” - Caribou
“Heat Distraction” - Women
“Breaking Glass” - David Bowie
“Glass” - Joy Division
“Mirror Love” - Adorable
“Window” - Flying Lizards
“Glass Enclosure” - Bud Powell
“Look Through My Window” - The Mamas and the Papas
“Glass Ceiling” - Metric
